Do Not Let 31 August Slip Past You

The first provisional tax deadline is approaching, and missing it comes at a cost.

If you are a provisional taxpayer, one date should be circled on your calendar right now. Monday, 31 August 2026, is the deadline for your first provisional tax payment for the 2027 tax year. It arrives quietly, but the penalties for missing it do not.

What this payment is

Provisional tax is not an extra tax on top of income tax. It is simply a way of paying your income tax in advance, spread across the year, so you do not face one large debt when SARS assesses you. Rather than a single big swell at the end, you make steady payments as you go.

The system requires two compulsory payments. The first, due 31 August, covers roughly half of your estimated annual tax liability. The second, due 26 February 2027, settles the balance based on your revised estimate for the year.

Who needs to pay

You are likely a provisional taxpayer if you earn income that does not have PAYE deducted by an employer. This commonly includes rental income, business or freelance earnings, and investment income above the threshold. If tax is not being withheld at source on some of your income, this deadline probably applies to you.

One point catches many people out: you must submit an IRP6 return even if your calculation comes to nil. Skipping the return because you think nothing is owed can still land you with a penalty.

What happens if you miss it

SARS does not treat this deadline lightly. A late payment can attract a penalty of 10% on the amount due, plus interest on any shortfall. If you materially underestimate your taxable income, a further under-estimation penalty can apply. These charges add up quickly, and they are entirely avoidable with a little planning.

Set your course early

The smoothest way through provisional tax is to prepare well before the deadline rather than scrambling in the final days. Estimating your taxable income accurately, preparing your IRP6, and making the payment on time keeps you clear of penalties and clear of stress.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, or you would rather hand the calculation to someone who does this every day, our crew is ready to help. Reach out to us well ahead of 31 August so we can get you sorted with time to spare.
